On Thursday 3rd November the Oxford Union at Oxford University debated the motion "This House believes that a homosexual lifestyle is no bar to becoming a Bishop". After opening speeches from students, the guest speakers were Richard Kirker (LGCM) and Gene Robinson (Bishop of New Hampshire) proposing and Andrew Goddard (Wycliffe Hall) and Colin Buchanan (former bishop of Woolwich) opposing. So, what is it usually thought to mean for doctrine in the Church of England that Article 40 was dropped from the (40 - 1 =) 39 Articles? Elsewhere online, some have argued that this plainly allows what was previously forbidden by Article 40-- belief that all will be saved, somehow, in the very end....
A bishop derives his authority from God and from the Gospel and the Bible.
As any Christian minister does.
Anything else is simply worldly and human orientated authority.
So a Bishop is a BIshop inasmuch as he upholds the faith, 'delivered once to the saints'.
If he fails ...
