| The Church of England the Funeral of Baroness Thatcher | |
| 1 [23384] Posted by: John Martin | Friday 26 April 2013 - 10:54am |
ADDED BY JOHN MARTIN ON BEHALF OF MARTIN CAVENDER
As a partner in a small business when she was around, I welcomed Margaret Thatcher. She at least enabled us to pay our staff and serve our clients. As a Christian believer involved in full-time ministry I believe that, like Churchill, she was the right person at the right time - and no, I'm not blind to her crashing faults and the damage left in her wake, though I would argue that history will show that much of that was not primarily of her making. As a member of the Church of England I'm glad she had a proper send-off, and delighted that Her Majesty the Queen was there to be part of it. |

| Progressive Orthodoxy: a way out of the impasse? | |
| 2 [23268] Posted by: John Martin | Tuesday 2 April 2013 - 10:38pm |
Phil. Nice to think we can agree on something! But get real. It is out of God's infinite capacity for love that he created the world and desired relations with humanity .... fall and redemption all follow. The various OT covenant templates all begin with recital of what God has done in love .... which of course is matched by human transgression. God's wrath is not the motive for his redemptive work. And I think I could sustain that interpretation precisely from the Scriptures you quote. |

In one sense, Phil, who could disagree? But you do put the stamp of your personality on how you express this. The Westminister Confession's opening could have focussed on wrath but instead it said, "Man's chief end is to glorify God and enjoy him forever." So I would want to say our greatest need is to enter into this. |

| Women Bishops: Church in all its Fullness | |
| 5 [23206] Posted by: John Martin | Wednesday 13 March 2013 - 11:12pm |
Phil. It's not a matter of dispute that the Bible text says what it says. The issue for us today is (a) what does it mean? and (b) how does it apply to us today (if there is an application). I for one don't draw the same conclusion as you and it has nothing whatever to do with believing or not believing the Bible. |

David R you rightly say, "Where we start from determines where we end up." I want to suggest that the best place to start is to ask: 1."What is Paul's understanding of the gospel?" (there are several statements in his writings) and 2. "Are conclusions we draw about his teaching consonant with Paul's gospel?" Discuss.
