Evangelical opponents of women bishops

Gulp Erasmus!

I'm afraid I disagree with you on almost every point you make :) - despite the fact that we seem to agree on the conclusion (although I'm not sure we do really), how you get there is very different to how I get there I suppose.

Liberation is not compartmentalised as you suggest I would argue.  The nebulous sense in which we are 'freed from sin' has an outworking that is far more than 'incidental', particularly to the Israelites, when they were freed from Egypt (I get no sense from the text that they thought this an 'incidental' part of the Gospel to them!).  Today we have slavery at an enormous level and again I would say that their 'actual' freedom from slavery is at the heart of the Gospel.

I do not see the restoration of the relationship between women and men as something which is a whim of a 'dying world' and I do not see this as a 'dying world' come to that.  The restoration and transformation of the relationship between men and women was God's intention from the beginning, our call as the imago dei is to be in partnership with God in the missio dei to build the regnum dei (Image, Mission, Kingdom of God).

Thus the call for people to get off their arse and work towards the equality of men and women is not a side issue, a secondary issue or incidental - it's at the heart of God's work in the world.  A world which is moving towards its own transformation and will see perfection in the eschaton, not death....

There is no neutrality on this one.
