Oath could be first step in bankers’ return to credibility – TheTablet

The idea of bankers’ swearing a financial version of the Hippocratic Oath first surfaced in 2009 and I wrote about it in The Tablet a year later when the Future of Banking commission recommended a medical model of ethics for financial services. It was among a range of ethical ideas that the commission put forward in response to the financial crisis that had gripped the world’s developed economies.

  1. It may be a mistake to look solely to doctors as a model of professional virtue. I would suggest we need to look at the range of professional bodies including accountants and lawyers. Here there the professional organisations produce ethical guidance for members and shape the ethos of the profession. All these new laws miss the mark because they set boundaries where as ethics also includes virtues, goals and vision.
