The question doctors fear most: ‘Do you believe in God?’ – Guardian

If they balk at the mere mention of God, do doctors miss an opportunity to comfort patients in their most trying times?

  1. I think this shows we need to know that those we have to trust are human. The answer is less important than that they are prepared to be known. This is why we trust or at least like politicians more when their personal problems become known. Asking about God also acknowledges the limits of medicine. The question shows a move to place hope elsewhere. If the doctor says “I don’t but many do” I think this is unlikely to have an adverse effect on the patient.
