Emmanuel by Mike Bartholomew-Biggs

Emmanuel

How shall we find him?

We must pick out a distant point of light

and walk away from ourselves

to an “X” that marks the spot,

trusting that our vision and the compass

will not betray us.

But would it be wiser

to spend a little time before we start

in marking out for ourselves

Safe positions to fall back on?

We surely needn’t lose our common sense

of self-importance?

We’ve grown good at folding

maps we do not read and cannot change;

and we have learned for ourselves

to take the world the way it comes:

so will we tell the one who lets us do so

“Be God without us”?
